Oamaru Blues

Penguins! "Little blues" are the name (so not 'blues' as in House of Blues). These are the penguins that Victor and I saw in Oamaru. "Little" because they are no more than 29cm tall.

We learned some neat things about these little blues. They go out to sea before sunrise and hunt pretty much all day. They are solitary until their return, at which point they gather into 'rafts.' Rafts come ashore over a period of about 90 minutes, at dusk. We saw six to twelve penguins in each raft.

We weren't permitted to take pictures--the flash can blind them!--but the pic presented here is from the Oamaru Blue Penguin website.
