Gisborne

As a city, Gisborne is not well-to-do but is nonetheless lovely, almost tropical in feel.

Victor and I decided that the vessel at top (not just at top of the pics below but also at top of a pole--hoisted?) is a representation of one of Cook's 18th-century ships. There's supposed to be a statue of Cook in town somewhere, but we didn't look for it. Cook as an explorer/claimer has kind of an up-and-down reputation in these parts.

The clock tower proclaims Gisborne as a much-smaller-than-Wellington community.
