Hokitika

We are in love with this town. It's tiny, and it looks like a Wild West outpost (see pics below). It's art-focused because jade, gold, and 'Ruby Rock' (NZ's only gemstone) are found in the local river (again, see pic below) and in other area rivers that are mountain/glacier-fed.

I could retire here, bring my sea glass and contribute to the arts scene. There's a house right on the water, a fixer-upper, available for $91K US. Such a temptation. The ocean pounds the shore all day long, great curls of water crashing to earth; and the food and cafes are plentiful, are wonderful, and include an Indian restaurant. :)
