Today we decided that we like the Northeast corner of New Bern (one road only) and lots of Carteret County. This county covers Morehead City and Atlantic, the shoreline parallel of Portsmouth Island. Pics are of the working boats of Atlantic and one shoreline plot of land there; followed by three (including Laughing Gulls) taken at Cedar Island, from which we take a ferry tomorrow over to the Outer Banks!
We are amazed that the ratio of occupied to abandoned and derelict houses, even on the waterfront, is about 20:1. Literally, everywhere we have been, this is true. If we were content to purchase a years-abandoned, asbestos-sided, mobile home-incorporating, "expanded" home needing "TLC" in Atlantic -- where waterfront land alone commands $250K -- it would cost us about $80K.
