How to prompt curiosity

I don't mean to sound like I know how this is done. I'm actually hoping to solicit 'how-to' ideas.

I'm working -- at least for the time being -- with a child who has autism. While I'd guess that it isn't impossible to know what goes in inside his head, it is pretty difficult; I for one have no idea how to get in there.

His mother would very much like to hear him use the W words: Why? Where? Who? But this child is not invested in his environment, or not invested beyond basic comfort. He appears to have no curiosity. So how can that be prompted? Can it be prompted?
