First, in case you don't know, let me say that I am a white, 46-year-old, married female with two children. I do not care for hip-hop.
Hitchens--who, if you recall, became a radically different creature after 9/11--was sufficiently imperious to put me off. No one in an intelligent conversation should ever come across as saying, "Oh, I know YOUR type." It is an insult to intelligence to demean any person in that way.
Furthermore, who exactly was playing to the crowd? Come again? With his "honest" drinking (like that would excite no comment)? Hitchens has become boorish and disturbingly establishment.
